Whitney Rose is getting candid about the personal struggles she says were behind her drinking before her separation from her husband, Justin Rose.

“The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” star, 40, confirmed in September that she and Justin were separating. As season 7 of

RHOSLC continues to air, Whitney is now sharing more about what was happening behind the scenes in her marriage and why she decided to reevaluate her relationship with alcohol.

During an appearance on the “Gabbing With Gib” podcast, Whitney explained that her drinking had become a way of coping with problems she was not yet ready to confront.

Whitney Rose Says She Was ‘Hiding’ Problems in Her Marriage

Whitney said she had been drinking more because she was “hiding and stuffing what was going on in my personal life, in my marriage.”

“And I was scared — I didn’t want anyone to know because I didn’t even know,” she explained.

“So yeah, the drinking was in excess because I was just coping with it,” Whitney continued. “But I was able to take a step back and realize that I can take it or leave it. If it’s not serving me, I don’t need it. And I have a much better relationship with alcohol now. And taking the break really helped me understand… the problem wasn’t so much drinking; the problem was that I’m not working through the elephant in the room: my marriage.”

Viewers have already seen Whitney discuss alcohol during the currently airing season of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.” She said it was no longer serving her and that she planned to cut it out of her life.

Her latest comments provide more context about what was happening privately as she and Justin struggled in their marriage.

The RHOSLC Star Calls Meredith Marks’ Comments ‘Two-Faced’

Whitney’s separation also reignited tension with RHOSLC co-star Meredith Marks.

After news of Whitney and Justin’s separation surfaced, Meredith posted on Threads about “karma,” then clarified that she didn’t wish ill on anyone.

“It’s ironic when you see [everything] that has been said about you manifest in the people who said it,” Meredith wrote in part. She later added, “I do not wish ill upon anyone or celebrate anyone’s demise.”

Whitney told Out that Meredith’s reaction was particularly frustrating after the two had made progress in their relationship.

“I don’t want to hurt my friends!” Whitney said. “Something that I’m learning how to do is standing up for myself. Especially with Meredith and Lisa, I feel like there’s a double standard. My kindness is mistaken for weakness. This season’s apology tour had me exhausted.”

Whitney said viewers will eventually see a positive moment between her and Meredith, but she believes Meredith’s response to the separation erased that progress.

“Meredith, I tried,” she said. “I gave it my best effort. We do share a beautiful moment later on in the season, but she undid all of that recently when the news broke about Justin and I. It’s pretty hypocritical. It was all undone with her two-faced comment.”

New episodes of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” air Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo.
