“The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” could be headed for a major cast shakeup after Mikayla Matthews announced she is leaving the Hulu reality show — and two of her costars are now questioning their own futures.
Mikayla announced her decision on social media, explaining that she decided more than a week earlier that she would not continue with the show “at this moment.” Her announcement comes as members of the cast are filming season 6 in Italy.
“I’ve said from the beginning of this that I’m not comfortable being a part of something that continues to platform behavior I don’t agree especially given my own experience growing up in a home with multiple forms of abuse,” Mikayla wrote.
She added that “there’s no amount of money worth going against my morals” and said continuing to profit from behavior she opposes would feel “wrong and unethical.”
Mikayla did not name a specific cast member in her announcement. Her exit comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding Taylor Frankie Paul, whose personal life has remained a major storyline on “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.”
Mikayla Matthews Says She Won’t Be Part of an ‘Enabling Cycle’
Mikayla and Taylor clashed during the most recent season of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” before eventually appearing to make amends on camera.
Production on season 5 was later paused amid domestic violence allegations involving Taylor and her ex, Dakota Mortensen. An older video showing Taylor physically assaulting Dakota also resurfaced ahead of her planned season of “The Bachelorette,” which ABC ultimately canceled before its premiere.
In announcing her departure, Mikayla said her experience on “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” had helped her provide for her family, but she was no longer willing to compromise her position.
“This show has been a huge part of my life and has helped me provide for my family,” she wrote. “I’m so grateful for the experience, and will continue sharing my story, my health and advocating for myself and others this shouldn’t be ‘relatable’ or entertainment in anyway.”
Mikayla added, “Supporting an ADULT doesn’t mean constantly making excuses for toxic behavior while giving unconditional sympathy and grace with zero accountability or change. I was in that enabling cycle for years, and I’m not going to be a part of that again! love you all.”
Layla Taylor & Mayci Neeley Hint They Could Leave ‘Mormon Wives’ Next
Mikayla may not be the only cast member reconsidering her future with the show.
Mayci Neeley told a fan on TikTok that she plans to finish the season currently in production but hasn’t decided what comes after.
“I am finishing this current season that we are filming and then not sure for after that,” Mayci wrote.
Mayci later posted a lengthy TikTok discussing scenes she filmed for seasons 4 and 5 that did not make the final episodes and again raised questions about whether she will remain with the show.
Layla Taylor gave a similar response during an Instagram Stories Q&A after a fan asked whether she planned to return.
“I just love her so much,” Layla wrote of Mikayla. “It’s such an impossible situation for everyone involved, but I am finishing season 6 and then [to be determined].”
Layla and Mayci are currently filming season 6 alongside Taylor, Jessi Draper, and Miranda McWhorter. Whitney Leavitt previously departed “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” after season 5.
