Jill Zarin’s frustration over an ice cream order in Japan quickly turned into a much bigger conversation with fans.

The former “The Real Housewives of New York City” star shared a since-deleted video about an experience at a shop associated with celebrity chef Alain Ducasse.

The issue centered on two flavors and their matching cones. Chocolate ice cream came with a chocolate cone, while vanilla was paired with a vanilla one.

Jill wanted a different combination, but the restaurant would not make the switch.

Jill documented the exchange, questioning why the restaurant couldn’t accommodate a seemingly simple request.

“I asked them if I could have a chocolate ice cream in this [vanilla] cone … She said no,” Jill explained. “I said, ‘Why not?’ No reason, just because.”

Her friend then ordered vanilla and offered to trade cones with Jill, but according to Jill, the staff still would not allow the switch.

“So, my girlfriend got vanilla in the [vanilla] cone, and she says, ‘You know, I don’t mind. I wouldn’t mind the chocolate cone. Just swap them out.’ The answer was [still] no,” she added.

Jill wondered whether the rule reflected dining customs in Japan or a policy connected specifically to Alain Ducasse. She also said she planned to tag the chef and ask for an explanation.

Her strongest argument, however, came from a sign displayed at the shop—and that’s where the complaint took an unexpected turn.

A Photo of the Sign Changed the Conversation

Jill interpreted the sign as letting customers choose their preferred cone or cup.

A photo of the sign later circulated online, and its wording seemed to contradict Jill’s interpretation. It said customers could choose “a cone or a cup,” referring to whether the ice cream was served in a cone or cup—not which cone flavor they could get.

That distinction quickly became a major focus of the backlash.

Some social media users also noted that menu changes are not always approached the same way in Japan as in the United States. Others questioned whether the relatively minor ice cream dispute needed to become a public complaint.

“I finally have something to complain about speaks volumes about who is always the problem…Jill,” one fan noted.

Jill eventually deleted her original video, but screenshots and reposts on Reddit continued circulating after it disappeared from her account.

Instead of settling the cone debate, removing the post left the internet to keep arguing over who had read the sign correctly.
